About the Hal Leonard Student Piano Library

Piano Lessons
The Hal Leonard Student Piano Library is available in five progressive levels. Each level includes a Piano Lessons book and several supplementary books. Piano Lessons books are the basic instructional books of our piano method, presenting core concepts through imaginative music and student-friendly text definitions.

Piano Practice Games
Piano Practice Games present imaginative ways to introduce pieces in Piano Lessons by coordinating technique, concepts, and creativity with the actual music in the Piano Lessons books. These preparation activities help focus learning, by ‘playing with’ each lesson piece aurally, visually, and physically. Whether used in individual or group lessons, Piano Practice Games are all designed to make music. Many activities include accompaniments that can be added by the teacher or by using the CD/GM disk from the corresponding Piano Lessons book.

Piano Technique
Piano Technique books present essential technical concepts through short, original musical exercises and etudes. The skills correlate directly to the music in the Piano Lessons books, and are an important part of the core method. Fully orchestrated accompaniments on CD or General MIDI disk are available for each exercise and etude. These accompaniments enhance the musical qualities of the exercises and etudes and reinforce rhythmic accuracy. The CDs include both a practice and a performance tempo for each etude.

Piano Solos
Piano Solos books feature original performance repertoire from 14 different composers. These inviting compositions provide ample reinforcement of skills and concepts learned in the corresponding-level Piano Lessons books. The outstanding variety of musical styles makes every solo an important piece in its own right – exciting to both performer and listener. Fully orchestrated accompaniments for every piece are available on CD or General MIDI disk. The CDs include both a practice and a performance tempo for each piece.

Piano Theory Workbook
HLSPL mascots Spike, Party Cat and friends guide the student through fun, creative assignments that introduce the language of music and its symbols for sound, silence, and rhythm. Ear training and basic theory exercises help students learn to write and play the music they are learning as well as the music they create themselves. Each book is directly correlated to the same level Piano Lessons book.

Notespeller For Piano
Notespeller For Piano Books 1, 2, and 3 help students acquire a facile and confident ability to read and write notes on the staff, and to practice writing a wide variety of music symbols. Each book is directly correlated to the same level Piano Lessons book. Students join Spike, Party Cat and friends on three imaginative adventures in these books. The stories include assignments that help students use the musical alphabet to read and write notes, write sharps and flats, identify and write intervals, 5-finger patterns, triads and inversions.

Teachers’ Guide
The Teachers’ Guide for Piano Lessons Book 1 and Teachers’ Guide for Piano Lessons Book 2 suggest ways to introduce and work with each piece in Piano Lessons books 1 and 2. Each guide contains ‘step-by-step’ suggestions incorporating listening activities, practice suggestions to aid learning, and performance tips for each piece. Specific reference to all coordinated activities and pieces in Piano Practice Games, Piano Technique, Piano Theory Workbook, Piano Solos, Notespellers, and Music Flash Cards are also included. Each guide also includes Lesson Planning Charts which provide an at-a-glance view of how to coordinate all of the core method books and materials in Books 1 – 5 of the Hal Leonard Student Piano Library.
